Joanne Rich

Individual Artist

I have always had a passion for creating new things. During my last year in high school, I was fortunate enough to attend a one week art enrichment program at Boyne River Natural Science School. During this week, I was given a brief introduction to papermaking with plants, and light sculpture making.

After high school, I attended the Ontario College of Art and Design. In 2004 I won first place in the LCBO's Student Social Responsibility Creative Competition. And in 2005, I received my Bachelor of Design degree.

After graduation I became an Art Director, working in advertising agencies such as Young & Rubicam and Grey Worldwide. Clients I have worked with include Ontario Tourism, Dairy Queen, and LG to name a few.

In July 2009, I lost my job as an Art Director due to the company's restructuring plan. Instead of looking for another Art Director job, I decided to take this opportunity to re-visit the experience I left at Boyne River, and make a career change.

I've re-learned papermaking and light sculpture making skills from reading books, researching online, and through simple trial and error.

To launch my new career, I began selling online at etsy.com and participating in shows such as Wychcraft Market, and the Holiday Art Market at 918 Bathurst. I then rented a small retail space at Periwinkle on Bloor, and started selling on consignment at Wise Daughters Craft Market. I have been accepted by the Scarborough Arts Council for my first juried exhibition, the Recall art exhibition at the Corridor Gallery.

Today, thanks to the support from the Ontario Arts Council, I am able pass on my artistic techniques to high school students throughout the province of Ontario.
