Philip Lefebvre

I’m an architect by education and a designer-builder by occupation.
I’ve drawn almost every day of my life. Mostly it’s work, and involves a lot of straight lines. Drawing of this kind is as much about designing - that is defining and solving problems in space as it is about recording what is designed.

I’ve also always drawn for recreation. Over the past several years In an attempt to push my drawing beyond being a hobby, I’ve taken up life drawing every week at The MacLaren Art Centre in Barrie. I’ve had the privilege to draw with and learn from, a group of dedicated artists. Working with a live model is an excellent workout for drawing skills and at the same time it’s as relaxing listening to music.
Its isn’t so much an expression of anything about me as it is an exercise in seeing, mark making and striving unhurried, toward some kind of craft like excellence.

The long tradition of drawing the human figure in western art exists because images of the human form touch us all in some way. I hope that a good drawing has something honorable to say.

My work has begun to evoke positive responses from my colleagues and with their encouragement I have been able to participate in some group shows. I guess that means I’m getting serious.

I have a strong sense of form and especially line, if not colour and in recent experiments with sculpture I believe I have found the direction I should go.
